Translation:

The sun has set, my Soul has sunk,
In the depths of despair as vast as the ocean,
For it (my Soul) is poised to fall into its war
Along with my flesh and blood

The sun rises again,
My Soul now shines,
To greet my Maker,
As an awakening lion,
For with compassion He has returned my Soul within me,
With utmost faith – I thank Him with Joy.

My days do pass, my days do end,
Neither taking nor giving.
If this is what you call "Life",
Tell me, my G-d, what is Death?!

My days do change, my days do come,
I fear no evil because You stand with me,
And one who finds You, finds Life,
To the Master of All, Who give me everything.

Have mercy, my G-d, for I do not know
How I can continue to live like this.
Is it better to forget all and be happy,
Or remember all and weep?

This is how I seek to live,
Always taking shelter in your shade,
To never forget, and yet remain joyful,
As I recall and am aware of all of Your gifts.

Keep me alive, my G-d please, until tomorrow,
For maybe I will finally solve the dream,
The sun is setting, the clouds are coming,
Night is rising from the depths.

Continue to bestow upon me peace and serenity –
In the Holy Torah I toil.

The sun rises!
My Soul now shines!
Keep me alive, my G-d, until the Redeemer arrives.

Information:

In the year 1907 (תרס"ז) , while still a bochur of 17 years old at the famed Slabodka Yeshiva, the Gaon Rav Avrohom Eliyahu Kaplan zt”l composed the poem, Shaka Chama.
Although Slabodka exemplified itself on Mussar from a perspective of “Gadlos HaAdom” “the greatness of man”, this poem was inspired by a different set of emotions and composed from the perspective of a yearning, embattled Soul.
The poem was set to the tune of an 1894 composition by Shaul Tchernichovsky and most probably has its origins in a Russian folk tune, but as with many niggunim, it was elevated and the sparks of holiness within it were liberated when it was modified by Rav Avrohom Eliyahu for his mussar poem.
Rav Avrohom Eliyahu’s original lyrics only included stanzas 1,3,5 & 7 and was much darker and plaintive in tone.
However, in 2015 (תשע"ה) for the occasion of his daughter’s wedding, Los Angeles businessman and philanthropist Reb Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz composed an amazing addendum to the poem: an original high part with its own lyrics, vocalized by Reb Shlomo Yehuda himself.
While the tune of the addendum is clearly inspired by the original melody, the new lyrics he composed, which are stanzas 2,4,6 & 8, shift the tone of the original poem to a more uplifting and positive theme.
